Teochew can be romanised in a variety of schemes, and are known in Mandarin as Chaozhou ren and Cantonese as Chiuchao yan. In referring to themselves as ethnic Chinese, Teochew people generally use Deung nang (唐人; Mandarin: Tangren), literally Tang Dynasty people, as opposed to Hang nang (漢人/汉人; Mandarin: Hanren), which means ‘Han Dynasty people’. Teochew people of the diaspora would generally use Hua nang (華人/华人; Mandarin: Huaren) to indicate Chinese heritage in a cultural sense.
Teochew people also commonly refer to each other as ga gi nang (自己人; Mandarin: zijiren) which means ‘our own people’[1].
To situate the term into a contemporary sociocultural context, Teochew people in Chaoshan of today refer to themselves as Chaoshan people, rather than Teochew people.
Teochiu always like to say “If you speak Teochew, you are one of us. ” This phrase shows that people from Chaozhou are all friendly to those who come from the same hometown. And as the matter of fact, Teochiu are really united and faithful to each other.
In myopinion, Teochiu stands for the spirit of bravery, brightness, and hardworking. Many Teochiu leave from hometown to the other cities even the other countries for a better life. They are brave, built their own home and chasing their new life by their hands.
Teochiu are so smart that they created numerous artcrafts, such like chinaware, tea ceremony, stitchwork and also the fantastic food(Chiuchow cuisine).
Nobody can deny that Teochiu are very harkworking. They have brave sprite, smart brain, and the most important, their untired hands. We all know that who is the richest Chinese in the world. We make our lives better by keeping our industrious character from one generation to another generation.
Just as the name of Chao Zhou described, (Chao means the Tide in Chinese )we have the spirit of Tide, never stop, never give up. Fight on for our dream forever.
yep~~~bravery, brightness, and hardworking, others always call me like that
Chaozhou is not a big city but has his long long history. maybe that is the reason why Teochius always help other Teochius…
