Face the Sea – Part 1 @ Techeng(特呈) Island

From tomorrow on, I will be a happy man;
Grooming, chopping, and traveling all over the world.
From tomorrow on, I will care foodstuff and vegetable,
Living in a house towards the sea, with spring blossoms.

From tomorrow on, write to each of my dear ones,
Telling them of my happiness,
What the lightening of happiness has told me,
I will spread it to each of them.

Give a warm name for every river and every mountain,
Strangers, I will also wish you happy.
May you have a brilliant future!
May you lovers eventually become spouse!
May you enjoy happiness in this earthly world!
I only wish to face the sea, with spring blossoms.

Zhanjiang at Map of Canton

Zhanjiang at Map of Canton

When we read this poet, the house that faces to the sea would be the key image in our mind. We can image the sea, the sun, the wave, the wind,,, that’s the life without any disturbing stuffs.  😛

Sea is always the dream land inside the poets, novels and songs. My mother said that she gave birth to me at a small sea side town and lived for 4 or 5 years. But after decades years of living in concrete forest, I have completely lost the memory of the sea. So I have a dream to go to the sea by myself one day long before. We decided to go to a place at this National Day however. Then we focused on Zhanjiang, which lie to the west of Canton more than 400 km away.

There is a small interlude happened before we started our journey. At first, we made a plan to go there with the tourist party. But the travel agency noticed us that the tourist party at that day was canceled for the poor number of people. OK, now we made it by ourself and the “Going to the sea” project was totally run by us, two guys that never been to Zhanjiang… Journey became to a adventure, sound great. Who cares, it isn’t the first time we did it like that 😐 We are so lucky that my old class mate go back to his hometown, Zhanjiang for Mid Autumn Day and gave us many help. Thanks you!

We started our trip on the morning and took off the bus at Zhanjiang about 15:00. Then we rush to the hotel and put off our carriage and went to our first target – Techeng Island. Techeng is quite small, not far from the urban district. There are many speed boat at the port which can take us to Techeng island, but frankly speaking, the price is quite expensive for us. 😐

After spending several minutes on the speed boat, the Techeng island appeared.

Techeng island is just a small fishing and seafood cultivation place. It’s not be mentioned until the President  Hu got on this island and gave a very high evaluation about its tourism industry potential. From then on, the tourism develop rapidly and make this island no more tranquil.

One of the highlight keywords of Techeng island is its mangrove forest(红树林). Mangrove is one of the few plants that can live with salt water and also has some function of cleaning out the harmful pollutions from the sea.

There is another fact you don’t know about Zhanjiang. At the ancient time, there is many alive volcanoes in this area. The volcanoes burst and formed many hill and island, including Techeng island. So we discovered some amazing rocks in the mangrove forest at the beach. Those rocks tell us what’s going on here at the ancient time. The hot lava rush into the cold sea water and evaporated them into vapor in no time. After that, the lave changed into these strange rocks that we found nowadays

The other one is the seafood cultivation. It said that this island is used for fishing and seafood cultivation before. And today there are still many seafood cultivation place in the sea and on the beach. The folks of the village at this island still live on this traditional industry. Here are some photos I took about that.

PS: That small crab is the fiddler crab, also called Zhaochao(招潮) crab in Chinese, for its big front clamp alway swings toward the sea, looks like that it is calling the tide.

How time flies, it’s time to go for dinner now~ Let’s go to make a adventure of the world of seafood~

Sunset is beautiful of course. But we missed the sunrise this time. Maybe the better arrangement is to spend the night at the island so that we can meet the sunrise~ 😎
