Galacy give me this little funny “robot” as the gift of Lantern Festival. And any relation between this cut machine and Chinese Lantern Day is that the LED eyes of this robot can twinkle when it alarms~~ Maybe that sounds simple but it’s very funny in deed.

Alarm clock is such remarkable thing. When we are still children, every family would get one at least and alarm various styles of clocks is sold in every department store and mall. I still remember that big white “cock” of my elder sister and the classical metal striker alarm clock. Today, alarm clock has gone from department store which has disappeared too. And its job is taken place by the smart phones which are more handy and flexible to change tone whenever we want. We can only find them on gift shop and put them just as a ,,, technically ,,, furniture.

How will I do with this little “Gear man”?

As a Linux and Unix user, I think to do “md5sum” for your files is just a piece of cake. We always to use md5sum command to check various files, such as a OS disk image. But today I come to a problem, some web site use the md5 of the user ID as the “Invitation code”

I would like to take “calcifer” as the user ID, so how to generate the md5 code for such a string??

Let’s see the manual:

MD5SUM(1) User Commands MD5SUM(1)
NAME
md5sum – compute and check MD5 message digest
SYNOPSIS
md5sum [OPTION]… [FILE]…
DESCRIPTION
Print or check MD5 (128-bit) checksums. With no FILE, or when FILE is
-, read standard input.
-b, –binary
read in binary mode
-c, –check
read MD5 sums from the FILEs and check them
-t, –text
read in text mode (default)
MD5SUM(1) User Commands MD5SUM(1)
NAME md5sum – compute and check MD5 message digest
SYNOPSIS md5sum [OPTION]… [FILE]…
DESCRIPTION Print or check MD5 (128-bit) checksums. With no FILE, or when FILE is -, read standard input.
-b, –binary read in binary mode
-c, –check read MD5 sums from the FILEs and check them
-t, –text read in text mode (default)

Obviously, we can’t make it as the usual way we used to do ….
So we have to do a litter small trick: using pipe ~

echo -n "calcifer" | md5sum -

PS: ”-n” is to make sure we didn’t include the “new line” this invisible symbol .
So here can to the result:

calcifer@calcifer-laptop:~/Desktop$ echo -n "calcifer" | md5sum -

3ba9c9546d5dcb7ce2ee47967a83e324 -

That’s what we need~~
And further more, it’s nautilus for some people to input the command like this:

echo -n calcifer | md5sum

In fact, the outcome is the same:

calcifer@calcifer-laptop:~/Desktop$ echo -n calcifer | md5sum -
3ba9c9546d5dcb7ce2ee47967a83e324 -

So to fix this problem, we need to update the certificate file.

Use vi or gedit or any editor you like to open the file: ~/.purple/certificates/x509/tls_peers/omega.contacts.msn.com
(For Pidgin in Windows, the path and file should be C:\Program Files\Pidgin\ca-certs\Microsoft_Secure_Server_Authority.pem)

Then copy all the text blew to replace the old content:

PPStream is one of the biggest online TV in China. Now PPStream release a new client software on Linux. The first official release version is packaged as Ubuntu deb package and … only for 32bit system(x86).

As the Ubuntu on my laptop is 64bit release and has be updated to 10.10, install such a 32 bit software is a god damn tough job.

As we know that to install a 32bit software on 64bit OS, the first step is to install 32bit libs :

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

and force to install without considering the architecture problem:

sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture somename.deb

Then if there is still some missing “lib” problem, use tool “getlibs” to solve:

getlibs -i somelib

And at the most of time, this problem has been solved at this step and we are happy to run the god damn 32bit on our OS.

But thanks to my upgraded Ubuntu 10.10, the tool “getlibs” didn’t work this time. And I tried to copy the missing libs for /usr/lib/ to /usr/lib32/ , only turn out a classical error message:

Library error: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

Familiar? Yup, of course. This message is very common when you do some coding. It tells us that this library is not suitable. The reason is that those file I copied from is 64bit base software and their lib is also not suitable for 32bit software to use.

OK, it’s so suck that I can’t install 32bit lib just by typing apt-get command to fetched. And the stupid time started…

I went to http://packages.ubuntu.com/ to search those packages which contain lib file I needed. Then found the 32bit version to download.
Due to the suck architecture difference, we can’t install those package directly of course. Then how to move the lib file to /usr/lib32?

Use this command:

sudo dpkg -x somepackage.deb

“man” the dpkg command you will found

-x, –extract archive directory
Extract the files contained by package.

This command just extracted to deb file and didn’t do anything after all.
Then you know how to do next:

sudo cp lib*.so.* /usr/lib32

OK, we fixed one lib already. But my nightmare didn’t stop, because the god damn PPStream needs lots of extra libs to run.

Finally, the god damn thing works and I can have a little TV time before went to bed…

Today is the Halloween. And to celebrate this day, Galacy and I plan a special gift for ourselves. Most of Chinese are not Christians, including us. So we have no tradition about make pumpkin lantern on the Halloween. And all we got is a small pumpkin that brought at supermarket. And here we began our great Halloween project~ How to make a pumpkin lantern is a brand new question for us. But to Google, it’s not a big problem~ “how to make pumpkin lantern” and we got answers. So, we gathered all stuff we need first: A knife, a soup ladle and a white vaseline butter… vaseline ? Yup, we really need vaseline. Wait to see when we need it.

Look at this poor little pumpkin for the last glance:

The fist step is to carve a pentagon on the top of the little lovely pumpkin and grab all stuff out of it~ It’s quite a tough job, because our pumpkin is too small to let the soup ladle in. But finally we made it perfectly. It’s much bigger than we imagined.

So after that, you might wonder where those stuff inside were gone. Don’t worry, we have clean up perfectly in this way:

Turn into our lunch

Then we got a empty pumpkin “box”, not a lantern. The next step is to design the funny and horrible “Jack O” face. For the first time to make this, we follow the tradition and draft a normal devil face on it.

OK, all preparation is done. Time to make our knife move:

After carving, we need to do a special job for it. To cover the whole pumpkin lantern with vaseline butter. The reason why we do that is to protect it to be oxidized and let it stand fresh for several more days.

To be a lantern, it must be lighten up~ !! Pumpkin Lantern No.1 Launch!!

At the end, why Halloween pumpkin lantern is called Jack O Lantern?? Let’s check it out on wikipedia:

A jack-o’-lantern (formerly also known as a Jack o’ the lantern) is typically a carved pumpkin. It is associated chiefly with the holiday Halloween, and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuus or jack-o’-lantern. In a jack-o’-lantern, typically the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out; an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved onto the outside surface, and the lid replaced. At night, a light is placed inside to illuminate the effect.
Common Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, committing pranks, telling ghost stories or other frightening tales, and watching horror films.

Actually it’s my fist time to come to Banana Leaf, and Banana Leaf really gave me a surprise.

Indian, Filipino, Vietnam, Thailand… there are too many different kinds of food waiting for us~ I hope I can try all of them at one time. But with my poor wallet, we’d better keep our heads clear. After a careful discussion, we made our order. Yep, a mix style feast~ Vietnam Big Shrimp with Plum Juice, Indian Durian chapatis, Meat slice Coconut Juice(I don’t know it belongs to which country style, but really tasty~), and Chinese broccoli. Make your mouth water, isn’t it?

I think the most attractive of Banana Leaf isn’t only these fascinating food, but also the special Southeast nation ambience. The waiters, waitresses and cooks are very passionate and humorous. Ever the security guard who comes from Philippines often amuse the costumer such as playing a little magic show.

There is a special group of people playing music and dancing from here and there in restaurant. Sometime they would sing their nations’ music and dance, and sometimes the English songs, even Chinese songs Wherever they go, the laugh and applause would come along. Here is a small video clip that shot by my cell phone. Though it isn’t very clear and the point of view is not good, the singers and dancers really gave us a very good impression.

Watching sunrise at DanXia is the very choice of most tourists. The best spot to see sunrise is the Elder Peak. Elder Peak is another high mountain in Mountain DanXia area. And for it’s height and direction, people can enjoy the most beautiful sunrise there. But in the other hand, to climb Elder Peak at the very early morning is also a big challenge for them.

The original plan is to get up at 4 o’clock and spend an hour for climbing then arrived the Sunrise Seeing Pavilion to watching the sunrise. But thanks to Galacy’s graceful dance movement, we have to take plan B to go to there… So if you wanna go to climb Elder Peak, don’t be as drumble as Galacy. Anyway, we arrived the top of Elder peak much more earlier, and saw many tourist already waiting here. Watching a sunrise is such like playing a gamble, you never know that the sunrise would as perfect as a pan-fry egg. And maybe we need more luck this time, the sun hided behind the cloud shamefacedly as a maiden. The “sunrise watchers” didn’t want to give up after they spent an hour climbing(and we two didn’t want to waste our telpher tickets ), most of people waited and waited for almost another hour there.

And finally :

From here, we can see not only the sunrise, but also the beautiful scenery of Danxia landform area.

We went down from the top of the peak and found many other scenic spots.

The guest-greeting pine of Danxia

A thread Sky?

After a very long long walk, we finally found the “female stone”, opposite of the male stone at Yangyuan Peak, but in a smaller size. Still have on comment about it…..

A very funny refrigerator~

The old geo Park gate:

Finally and then, our journey ended and we hardly can’t brought the train tickets to go back to Canton Anyway, it was a very good experience for us~

Galacy and I always want to go to climb a great mountain and see sunset or sun rise. Danxia mountain is just on the north of Guangdong, 2 hours railway travelling from Canton, is the best place nearby for us. We plan this trip two months ago, but always got delayed. Recently, a news said that Mount Danxia were inscribed as a World Heritage Site as part of the property China Danxia successfully. This news really “encourage” us to make DanXia plan out of paper.

Mountain Danxia is a famous scenic area near Shaoguan city in the northern part of Guangdong, China. The Danxia mountain is formed from a reddish sandstone which has been eroded over time into a series of mountains surrounded by curvaceous cliffs and many unusual rock formations (Danxia Landform). It is described in local signage as a “world famous UNESCO geopark of China”. There are a number of temples located on the mountains and many scenic walks can be undertaken. There is also a river winding through the mountains on which boat trips can be taken to enjoy the scenery.
– Wikipedia.org

I am always wondering how this mountain range be name as “丹霞” such a beautiful name. After I saw a poster there I understood finally. Ancient Chinese loves to explore the natural, especially the scholars. They discovered that the could of rocks in Mountain Danxia have plenty of beautiful color. The red ones are almost the same color as Lilium concolor. And if you look from a wide angel, great mountain would make up a huge sea of colorful shinning cloud. So the ancient scholars described it as ” 色如渥丹，灿若明霞”. Then people name this mountain range as “丹霞” for the meaning as “Clouds of Lilium concolor”.

Our plan is to see the sunset at YangYuan Peak and sunrise at Elder Peak. After we arrived scenic area, we check in the hotel that we booked online and feed ourselves up. We didn’t start our trip quickly but go to bed until 4 o’clock because the local people in form us that at that time we can arrive the mountaintop of Yang peak as soon as the sun begin to set down.

YangYuan Peak is named for the famous rock, the YangYuan Rock, also called “Ancestral Rock” or directly “Male Stone”. Why? maybe you have found the reason as soon as I show up the picture Many people come here to see this strange rock and take photos. And lots of them believe that this rock has a strange power that it can decide the gender of the infant. So there is a special place for them to pray the “Male Stone” to have a male or female offspring. It is not a joke in China really. Even today there are still hundreds thousands of people come to burned sticks and pray.

OK, although YangYuan Rock is very “charming”, our main target today is to climb the YangYuan Peak where we will see our first sunset together. After we left the Male Stone, we began the hardest part of our journey. There are two track to go to the top of this peak and we decided to climb via the more difficult one. Maybe we believe that the more effort we did, the more beautiful sunset we saw.(Actually we don’t know anything about these tracks before climbing) After a few minutes “normal” mountain pass, the real big show came out! The path began to “stand up” from here and some place are totally leaning 90 degree. It feels that we were rock climbing, not mountaineering. Anyway, we are all young and “strong”, we won’t give up to any difficult mountain path.

It took us almost an hour to approach the highest place of the YangYuan Peak, from where we can have a great view. It’s very nice, isn’t it?

We have a rest there to restore our energy for the next step, the best place to see the sunset, the gorgeous sunset, the dramatic sunset ~

The light of the setting sun was change very second. You can’t read their beauty totally by my several pieces of photos. But I hope to share it with all people. The setting sun inflames the sky, and glorified the scene, every things change and became miserable.

The most wonderful time faded so quickly. As the sun sank, it’s time to leave and search a great feast to feed us up. ~ Let’s begin go down to the feet of the hill.

With the gorgeous memory, this sunset never fade!

Wall· E is one of my favorite cartoon movie. This lovely and cute robot is so adorable especially when his innocent eyes look at you directly. And I decided to buy Galacy this toy of Wall· E as one of her birthday gifts, hopping that she would love my presents.

This robot model has a special function that it can replay the transforming process just likes Wall· E did in the movie~!!

Our little Wall· E, let’s move out !

Cube mode:

Release the Legs of track

Spread out two arms

And finally comes out the funny head and innocent big eyes~~
